I am often asked how I got into ADHD coaching for students. As I shared my story with a new acquaintance this week, I was reminded of the power of coaching and how it has had a positive impact on individuals and families with ADHD. When I started my ADHD and life coaching business, I honestly felt as if coaching chose me. In 1996, I was handed a copy of Driven to Distraction, open to the chapter on ADHD coaching by Nancy Ratey, who was an integral part in the development of ADHD coaching. If it were not for Nancy Ratey and Susan Sussman and their efforts to bring ADHD coaching to the world, I would not be a practicing coach and trainer today. Many thanks to both of my dear friends.
So, how did I get started? It began with a little boy at a Thanksgiving luncheon at my son’s elementary school. Those of you who have read my book, Empowering Youth with ADHD, have read the story in my introduction.
An 8-year-old boy from my son’s class was too distracted by the holiday decorations and the noise in the cafeteria that day to focus on his food; so, for most of the luncheon, his plate went untouched. His parents were unable to attend that day and I had the good fortune of sitting next to him. I noticed that his plate was full, and I asked him if he was hungry. Indeed, this child was very hungry but admitted that he was not sure where to start, since there was so much going on! Together we crafted the biggest turkey sandwich with all the fixings we could fit on a dinner roll and he ate it up in a matter of minutes. I never actually touched his plate, but instead I coached him through the process, asking questions about his likes and dislikes, helping him refocus as needed. Research has shown that eating lunch is important for young minds. This young mind would not have eaten lunch, if I had not intervened. As I walked home from the school with my husband, I knew that I had to do something to help students who were struggling to focus and perform effectively in school and in their daily lives. From that moment on, I chose to become an ADHD student coach and never looked back!
