Book Excerpt: Failing to meet coaching expectations

A failure to meet coaching expectations sometimes relates to resistance to change, a phenomenon not uncommon among young people, particularly adolescents. It is important for parents to understand that for youth with ADHD, learning disabilities, and coexisting conditions, resistance is often a manifestation of unreadiness, emotional immaturity, and unknowing. Oftentimes, adolescents are pushing back against their parents’ suggestion of coaching or don’t know what they are supposed to change in order to improve and are afraid of yet another failure. I encourage parents and coaches to be patient and open the door to conversation, which may give young people an opportunity to consider what is actually holding them back.
