The intake session is an opportunity for the coach, client, and parent to continue the educational discussion about what coaching is that began during the prescreening session. Confusion often exists for parents and clients regarding the details of the coaching process. The intake is a time for explaining the coaching process in detail, so that any confusion that might exist is reduced and, one hopes, eliminated. Also important to consider is that parents of a new client may have their own attention problems, making repetition and review of the coaching process a good idea for them as well as the young person. It is essential for coaches to be open to answering questions and responding to requests for clarification of the coaching process. By doing so, the coach shows respect and consideration for both client and parent and lays the foundation for an effective coaching process to come.
